Yes, a yeast infection can go away on its own for a few women, most likely right after her period.
.
Different types of infections:

Signs of yeast infections:
White, cottage cheese-like discharge
Swelling and pain around the vulva
Intense itching

Signs of bacterial vaginosis:
A white, gray or yellowish vaginal discharge
A fishy odor that is strongest after sex or after washing with soap
Itching or burning
Slight redness and swelling of the vagina or vulva

Signs of trichomoniasis
A watery, yellowish or greenish bubbly discharge
An unpleasant odor
Pain and itching when urinating
Most apparent after your period

Yeast infections can travel throughout your blood system depending on the type you have. So yes, to answer one question, it can go away and keep coming back. Yeast infections can also occur in other places, particularly where you sweat, like your arm pits or under your breasts.

It sounds like a yeast infection to me. You can get over the counter creams and that generally makes them go away. It would be wiser though, since it seems like you've had it for some time, to get a yeast infection pill from your doctor. For example, Diflucan. It's a one time pill and generally does the job, it can be repeated 3 days later and if it isn't gone by two pills then consult your doctor again.
